Contingent v. Retained Searches
Retained search often applies to senior executives, while contingent searches are used most often to fill middle- or junior-level positions.
In either case, Exemplar will prepare candidates for interviews, assist in the negotiation of compensation and take all necessary steps to ensure the successful closure to the search.
Contingent Searches
Contingent searches are typically meant for more time-sensitive hiring needs and not conducted exclusively by one firm. Remuneration is made when the firm’s candidate is hired.
Exemplar maintains a proprietary database of prospective employees, which can accelerate the search for qualified candidates.
Contingent searches can be as detailed and thorough as a client desires. Screening can include personality type tests, full background checks, verification of references, experience and education, as well as drug testing.
Candidates do not pay a fee to the recruiter. The client pays a fee, if and only if a candidate is placed. Contracts with clients expressly clarify the circumstances in which a fee for services is paid prior to a search beginning.
Retained Searches
With a retained search, the client engages one recruiting firm to conduct the search on an exclusive basis. Typically, qualified candidates are targeted, located and presented to the client within a specified time period, usually one to three months and the firm is paid throughout the search process.
The retained search process begins by garnering an intimate understanding of the client and its corporate culture, and of the role and how it functions within the firm.
With this knowledge, Exemplar scours the market to provide the best fit possible for the role, or offer advice on the role to the client to address any oversights or omissions in the prospective search.
With such specialized search, candidates are likely to already be employed and not currently seeking another opportunity and need to be approached with measured discretion.
Candidates are then screened through the review of their work experience, interviews and review of academic qualifications, among other criteria. Qualified candidates are then approached about the opportunity and their interest in the role is gauged.
Interested candidates are interviewed and assessed through reviewing past performance in similar work environments. Candidates are also evaluated on their cultural fit with the client.
After properly vetting candidates, Exemplar will provide the client with these candidates for consideration.
The retained search is a highly intensive recruiting tool. Exemplar will allocate staff and resources dedicated to the retained search. If retained searches dominate Exemplar’s mix of business, we will only take on a manageable number of assignments in order to give each search the proper consideration. |
